Destination Guide
Balcón de Europa · Hidden Coves · Nerja Caves · Authentic Andalusia
Overview
Nerja is perhaps the most romantic and atmospheric town on the entire Costa del Sol. Perched dramatically above the Mediterranean on a series of rocky headlands, it combines the beauty of a traditional Andalusian white village with some of the most spectacular coastal scenery in southern Spain.
The Balcón de Europa, a palm-lined promenade projecting into the sea, is justifiably one of the most photographed spots in Spain, and the views on a clear day extend east along the coastline to the Sierra Nevada mountains rising from the sea. Below the balcony, hidden coves and translucent turquoise water await.
Unlike Marbella or Torremolinos, Nerja has retained its genuine village character, the historic centre buzzes with local life, independent restaurants and a pace of living that feels far removed from the tourist resorts nearby. Yet it has excellent beaches, great accommodation and is increasingly popular with discerning British, German and Scandinavian visitors who return year after year.
The surrounding area is extraordinary, the Maro natural park to the east offers dramatic cliffs and pristine coves accessible only by kayak, while inland the whitewashed village of Frigiliana (just 8 km away) is one of the most beautiful villages in Andalucía.
