Explore Andalucía
One of the greatest strengths of a Costa del Sol holiday is what surrounds it. Within 2 hours of the coast you have Granada's Alhambra, Ronda's extraordinary gorge, some of the most beautiful white villages in the world, UNESCO prehistoric monuments and the southern tip of Europe.
A private villa on the coast gives you the ideal base, a comfortable home to return to each evening, a private pool for the hot afternoons, and a rental car to reach every corner of Andalucía. No rigid hotel schedules, no group tour timings. Just the freedom to explore at your own pace.

Recommended Trips
The Alhambra palace complex is one of the most beautiful buildings on Earth, a non-negotiable day trip from the Costa del Sol. Book Nasrid Palaces tickets months in advance.
Tip: Book immediately once you confirm your trip dates. The Nasrid Palaces sell out completely.
Perched above a 100-metre gorge, connected by the magnificent 18th-century Puente Nuevo bridge. One of the most dramatic small cities in Spain, with Michelin-starred restaurants and a wonderful old town.
Tip: Avoid Saturday afternoons in summer, coach traffic is very heavy. Early morning is magical.
One of Spain’s most beautiful white villages, a perfectly preserved Moorish upper quarter of narrow alleys, ceramic tiles and bougainvillea. Combine with Nerja for a perfect day.
Tip: Arrive before 10am to have the alleys to yourself. The light on white walls in early morning is extraordinary.
UNESCO dolmens 5,500 years old, a magnificent Moorish fortress and, 20 minutes away, El Torcal de Antequera, a karst landscape of surreal limestone formations. An extraordinary combination.
Tip: El Torcal in spring (April–May) is outstanding, wildflowers and griffon vultures circling overhead.
Andalucía’s magnificent capital, the Cathedral, the Alcázar (one of the finest Islamic palaces in existence), the flamenco of Triana and tapas culture that rivals anywhere in Spain.
Tip: Start early. Seville in July gets extremely hot by noon. Book the Alcázar in advance.
A fascinating British territory perched on the rock at the southern tip of Europe, with Barbary macaques, a cable car to the summit, spectacular views of Africa and a distinctly surreal cultural atmosphere.
Tip: The Rock of Gibraltar (Upper Rock Nature Reserve) is the must-see. Arrive by 9am to beat the queue for the cable car.
A spectacular 7.7 km walk along a narrow path pinned to the walls of the Gaitanejo and El Chorro gorges, one of the most dramatic hiking experiences in Spain. Book online in advance.
Tip: Book at caminodelrey.info immediately, weekend dates in spring sell out 3–4 weeks ahead.
A beautiful whitewashed village in the hills with extraordinary views over the Mediterranean to Africa, genuinely charming and more authentic than its proximity to the coast might suggest.
Tip: Drive up for sunset, the views at golden hour are some of the finest on the coast.
A private villa on the Costa del Sol gives you the freedom to explore all of Andalucía, beaches in the morning, Alhambra for lunch, flamenco in the evening.

A rental car is strongly recommended for most day trips, it gives you complete flexibility for timing and access. Ronda, Frigiliana, Antequera, El Torcal and the Caminito del Rey are all best reached by car. Granada is accessible by bus and train from Malaga. Gibraltar is reachable by bus from Marbella. For maximum day trip potential, hire a car.
Mijas Pueblo (donkey taxis and mountain views), Gibraltar (cable car and monkeys), the Caminito del Rey (from age 8, genuinely thrilling), Antequera town (dolmens are fascinating for older children) and Frigiliana (beautiful, flat old quarter). Most day trips work well with children. Andalusian towns and villages are very family-friendly.
As early as possible, months in advance for summer visits. The Nasrid Palaces (the most important part) have a strictly limited capacity with timed entry. They sell out completely in June, July and August, and often weeks ahead in spring and autumn. Book at alhambra-patronato.es the moment you have confirmed travel dates.
Some combinations work well as a single day. Frigiliana and Nerja (15 minutes apart) is perfect. Antequera and El Torcal is another good pairing. Granada and Ronda is too far as a single day. Most individual destinations warrant a full day to do them properly.
